Networking Tips for Students

For experienced professionals, recent graduates or final year students, the best networking events in the industry are international oil and gas shows, such as ATCE 2006.

ATCE 2006 hosts a dedicated recruitment event called Oilcareerfair, where interested candidates can meet HR professionals of actively recruiting companies.

Why is networking important?

  • Networking can establish contact with people who might ultimately lead you to a job opportunity. Experts report that only 20 percent of all jobs are advertised in the classifieds. Networking can lead to the other 80 percent!
  • Learn the jargon of a particular occupational field.
  • Identify role models or mentors to guide your professional development.
  • Gain feedback on your qualifications and resume.
  • Learn about unfamiliar geographic regions or countries.
  • Obtain support and encouragement from others who share your interests.

Tips for networking at ATCE 2006

  • Check the list of Oilcareerfair participating companies.
  • Conduct preliminary research on the employers you are most interested in. Most employers post ample information regarding their organizations on their websites.
  • Take copies of your updated resume with you.
  • Dress appropriately; if you have specific appointments set up, dress as if for an interview.
