Field Trip
Urban Oil Fields of the Los Angeles Basin: Geology, History, Oil, and Urban Living
0700–1700, Sunday, 11 November
This trip provides a geologic overview of the oil fields along the western shelf, Newport-Inglewood fault zone, and northern shelf of the Los Angeles (LA) Basin. The expedition treats you to a sampling of the geology, environment, politics, history, and future of urban oil fields in the LA Basin.
The trip starts with a look around Long Beach where the giant Wilmington Oil Field (9 billion bbl original oil in place) underlies the entire harbor area. The trip makes its way to the Inglewood Oil Field where we will see how urban development coexists with historic and active oilfield activities. We continue north to Beverly Hills to tour the Pico and Packard drill sites, which were designed as buildings to blend in with the high-rise buildings in the area.
Separate ticket purchase required.
PLEASE NOTE: Registration for the field trip is currently full. If there are "no shows" on-site, people interested in attending may inquire in Registration before the bus leaves that morning from the Anaheim Convention Center.
