Thamir Abbas Ghadhban is chairman of the advisory commission for Iraq’s prime minister. He was a member of the Iraqi National Assembly in 2005, serving also as a member of the constitutional and economic committees. He became an advisor to the vice president in March 2006.

After the fall of the regime in April 2003, Ghadhban played a leading role in managing the severely damaged oil industry, which led to the resumption of oil activities throughout the country. He became the chief executive officer of the Ministry of Oil in May 2003 and later became Minister of Oil from June 2004 through May 2005.

From 1991 to 1992, he worked as director general of Planning and Studies in the Ministry of Oil. From 1989 to 1990, he worked as director general of Reservoir and Field Development in the Ministry of Oil, Baghdad, and supervised Reservoir and Field Development Studies as well as Technical and Economic Feasibility Studies and Negotiation of Contracts.

Ghadhban worked in Basrah until 1989 in the disciplines of Petroleum and Reservoir Engineering of Southern Iraqi oil fields and became the head of the Petroleum and Reservoir Engineering Department.

He is author and coauthor of more than 50 studies and technical papers on various aspects of Iraqi oil fields, as well as several published and presented papers on Iraq’s oil industry. Ghadhban is also a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. In 2000, he was the winner of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) scientific award.

Ghadhban holds a BS degree in geology from University College, London, and an MS degree in petroleum reservoir engineering from the Imperial College, London.
