Director's Blog

Helen Chang is the 2009-10 SPE Director, Canadian Region.

Welcome to 2010!

It’s so hard to believe that the holiday season flew by so quickly.  I hope that we are now reaching the end of winter as the days continue to get longer and the temperatures will hopefully keep increasing.

February is Awards Month for SPE.  The deadline for submitting  nominations for SPE international and regional awards is 15 February, so now is the time to recognize your dedicated volunteers and technical leaders .  There are many awards that recognize dedicated service or technical contributions both on the international and regional level.  We also encourage your nominations for the  Regional Distinguished Corporate Service Award that recognizes outstanding support from a company or organization in support of the SPE membership, programs and events, and their staff volunteerism and is not solely based on financial contributions.   There is also a Young Member Service Award that recognizes dedicated service to our Society for members age 35 and under.

In case you’re wondering whether to submit your nomination  in the regional or international category, it may be of interest to know that winners of any regional awards will automatically be considered for the international awards in the following year.  From a personal perspective, receiving an SPE professional award to this day remains one of the most memorable and humbling moments in my career.  So, I encourage you to take the time and recognize a special volunteer or technical leader because the SPE would not prosper without dedicated members like yourself.

March 1 is the deadline for the Regional STAR Scholarship and Fellowship for the Canada region.  In 2009, SPE International Board of Directors approved for each of its 15 regions valued up to $20,000 USD ($5000 per year)  undergraduate scholarship and one $40,000 USD ($10,000 per year) graduate fellowship renewable yearly for up to four years or until graduation.  All students attending an accredited Canadian university in a petroleum industry related field are eligible.  High school seniors entering university may also apply for the undergraduate award.  More details can be found at:
