Petroleum Society and SPE merger officially closes

Helen Chang is the 2009-10 SPE Director, Canadian Region.

After almost three years of work and planning, the merger of the Petroleum Society of Canada and the Society of Petroleum Engineers officially closed today.

We are very pleased to welcome all of our members to a larger organization in Canada that will focus on focus on enhancing benefits for the combined membership and supporting the Canadian E&P business and technology.

Members of the Petroleum Society can easily activate their membership in SPE by using the opt-in link that was sent to them by email on DATE. Those who were already members of SPE do not need to do anything, although this is a good time to update your membership information if you have not done so.

The Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology will continue as a peer-reviewed monthly focusing on Canadian operations.  All Canadian members will receive the journal through 2009, along with JPT.

The Petroleum Society’s Tech Bank papers will be available through OnePetro, the multi-society online library administered by SPE.  As a special transition offer, the Tech Bank collection will be available on DVD to any Petroleum Society member who paid dues in 2009. The DVD will include Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology papers published through December 2009.   The DVD will be sent only to 2009 Petroleum Society members who request it.

Information about reserving a copy of the Tech Bank DVD and other news of interest to Canadian members can be found on SPE’s Canada regional web page at www.spe.org/canada. A list of frequently asked questions about the merger is also available there.

The Petroleum Society’s Calgary office  becomes the SPE Canada Office. . The office address and telephone number remain the same:

Calgary, Alberta T2P 3L5

This is a great opportunity to develop an even stronger organization in Canada and to enhance technical knowledge exchange globally. I look forward to working with you in the coming months.

Best regards,

Helen Chang
