Abstract

A tool joint for 4-1/2 inch drill pipe has been developed that will seal 12,500 psi gas pressure. Pipe with this tool joint can be used for the drilling program and for tasks normally done with a work string. This paper includes the description of the applications for which the tool joint was developed, the development process, the results of the finite element analysis of the tool joint and seal, the performance characteristics of tool joint and the testing that was done.
