Drilling and Completion Challenges in Carbonate Formations
18-20 November 2008
Doha Marriott Hotel
Doha, Qatar
The challenges in drilling and completing carbonate formations continue to increase due to evermore
aggressive targets and higher demand for production for both oil and gas. These challenges have created a
number of innovative solutions that have advanced the efficiency and effectiveness of our operations. This
ATW will provide a platform for discussing some of these challenges and how new ideas/technologies helped
overcome these issues.
Example topics for discussions include:
Drilling Topics
- Rotary steerable applications and their trade-offs
- Drilling fluid optimisation for carbonate drilling
- Encountering and mitigating vugular and severe losses
- Understanding vibrations and BHA design
- Optimizing drilling parameters to drill faster
- Rotary BOP applications - Case histories
- Plateau optimisation opportunities
- Interbed shale challenges and mitigators
- Reaching the technical limits to lengthen single bit runs
- Carbonate wellbore stability and hole conditioning
- High efficiency rig opportunities Carbonate Perforation and Stimulation topics
- Application of viscoelastic diverting fluids in dry gas condensate reservoirs. Specific focus on viscosity breakers and cleanup of viscoelastic fluids in gas reservoirs.
- Impact of perforation techniques on stimulation performance in carbonate reservoirs. This could include shot density, phasing, perforation tunnel length, effect of overbalance, perforation modeling techniques, etc.
- Spent acid cleanup considerations in thick multi-layer carbonate reservoirs. Issues include ability to cleanup with differential reservoir pressures in the layers and the impact of spent acid in the formation for long durations (years).
- Advantages and disadvantages of open - hole vs cased - hole completions in thick carbonate reservoirs. Open hole techniques could include conventional, high angle, horizontal, or multi-lateral designs.
Who Should Attend
This Workshop is intended for Drilling and Completion Engineers and Leaders, Rig Operators and Service Company Representatives to share their experience and learnings from drilling and completing in carbonate reservoirs. University and Research Institute Representatives are also encouraged to participate.
