About Doha
Qatar, on the west coast of the Arabian Gulf, is a peninsula of some five thousand square miles stretching from the border with Saudi Arabia in the south towards the island of Bahrain in the North. It is one of the fastest growing members of the 6-nation Gulf Cooperation Council. The capital city, Doha, lies on the east coast and is home to about 60% of the country’s inhabitants. The population, estimated at 600,000 including expatriate labor, is projected to rise to 1 million by 2017.
Much of Qatar’s oil and natural gas wealth is visible in Doha, which is the economic centre of Qatar. Doha’s economy is built on the revenue the country has made from its oil and natural gas industries, and the Qatari government is rapidly trying to diversify the Qatari economy in order to move away from this dependence on oil. As a result, Doha is currently experiencing a very large boom, with the city developing very rapidly - this is mostly the result of Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa’s modernisation program.
