SPE/IBP Digital Oilfield Joint Workshop
23-24 October 2008
Pestana Bahia Hotel
Salvador, Bahia, Brazil
The E&P industry has led the way in applying leading-edge computing and communications technology. Seismic processing and imaging, reservoir simulation, and many other areas provided notable advances to our business.
In the 21st century, the fast pace of technology development continues, this time with the goal of automating and optimizing the operation of the oil field itself. There is a renaissance underway that promises to yield enormous gains.
This workshop will explore key questions about how we are doing in the digital oil field. Topics to be discussed will include
- The Starting Point: Where We Are Today
- Infrastructure: Meeting Business Needs
- Software: What We Are Missing
- Reliability/Maintenance: The Weaknesses
- Value Proposition: Serving All the Customers
- Business Case: Finding the Value
- The Digital Engineer: Developing Needed Skills
- The Future: Where We Go From Here
This workshop will benefit all who are working to advance the digital oil field, including IT specialists, surface and subsurface engineers, and operations specialists.
Workshop Format
This workshop uses oral presentations to cover the topics mentioned above. Although no formal papers will be published, the workshop leadership will publish a summary document. This document will include highlighted technologies and practices discussed, along with the conclusions of the workshop and any consensus recommendations.
SPE/IBP workshops are content driven and emphasize recent experiences and practices. Participants and presenters are encouraged to speak openly and candidly about the issues. The emphasis of this workshop is on sharing expertise and experiences. Presenters are strongly encouraged—but not required—to provide public versions of their materials for distribution to the participants.
