Hydraulic fracturing as a well completion technique has been used by the industry for over sixty years from the time when it was first tested in the mid-continent of the USA in the 1940’s.  However, for the first thirty years, its application was primarily focused on North America as a means to enhance production from low permeability reservoirs to the point of enabling economic development.
