Deepwater Drilling -- What are the Challenges

Session Co-Chairpersons/Moderators
Colin Swan, FMC Technologies
Nigel Meany, AGR Petroleum (ME) Ltd.

This session will review the technical limits and risk management issues along with the people requirements for deepwater drilling. What are the differences in the deepwater basins in Asia versus the other deepwater basins around the world? What lessons can we learn? What access is there to deepwater rigs, and what options do we have?

The session subtopics include the following:

  • Risk management, application, and process
  • Regional subsurface variations
  • Infrastructure/logistics
  • Cost
  • Availability and development of training (best practices)
  • Application of process to reduce dependency on pPeople

1330-1530

Deepwater Drilling Hazards

Session Co-Chairpersons/Moderators
Frank McEwan, Schlumberger
Melvin Devadass,3M Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.

The goal of the session is to share information and experience on critical safety issues in deepwater drilling operations. The topics covered will include an overall view of deepwater drilling in fractured carbonates and well control hazards such as shallow water flow and gas hydrates. De-risking these scenarios is of primary importance, requiring a focused approach in pre-drill planning. The session sub topics include the following:

  • Shallow hazards
  • Exploration
  • Development
  • Completion
  • Well integrity – short- and long-term
  • Deepwater carbonates
  • Consideration for drilling fluid selection

1600-1800

Deepwater Drilling Practices

Session Co-Chairpersons/Moderators
Bjørn Tore-Anfinsen, SPT Group
Guillaume Plessis, NOV Grant Prideco

The operating window for well control while drilling, running casing, and cementing is typically narrower in deepwater wells. This is caused by lower overburden weight and also extreme geometry with the BOP located relatively close to the reservoir and also large riser volume and long choke and kill lines. This may require deploying specific tools or techniques to ensure a safe and successful drilling operation. This session will address the following:

  • Well control challenges
  • Technology awareness and required technical skills
  • Worldwide best practices
  • Well engineering and well construction considerations
  • Dual gradient/MPD solutions for deepwater
  • Consideration for drilling fluid selection

Deepwater Completions

Session Co-Chairpersons/Moderators
Ben Lim, Baker Oil Tools
Nathaniel Peter, Baker Hughes (M) Sdn. Bhd.

The design of deepwater completions vary widely in terms of complexity and technical challenges. Various parameters such as water depth, riser configuration, and the required completion objectives can drastically affect the way the completion is designed. Additional factors such as completion system reliability, pressure integrity, inflow control, and monitoring have to be considered in the design of deepwater completions. This session addresses the important topics related to deepwater completions.

  • Completion system design for long-term well integrity
  • Sand management in deepwater completions
  • Flow assurance from the production perspective
  • Management of casing annulus pressure fluctuations
  • Intervention-less completions and monitoring

1100-1300

Drilling Rigs and Structures

Session Co-Chairpersons/Moderators
Ahmad Nahrawi bin Mohamad, PETRONAS
Jason Pinto, ROC Oil Co. Ltd.

Deepwater drilling changes the game for drilling rigs, to, and these mobile offshore drilling units (MODU) have to be designed or upgraded to be able to work in ever deeper waters. This session reviews what is required for rigs used for drilling or intervening in deepwater exploration or development programs, including the following:

  • Rigs availability
  • Surface BOP for deepwater
  • Managing a new start-up
  • Extending rig water depth capability

Well Interventions -- Rig Assisted and Rigless
Session Co-Chairpersons/Moderators
Colin Swan, FMC Technologies
Michael Scott, The Expro Group

This session will review the development of technology for rigless and rig-assisted well intervention, and develop an appreciation of the technical limits and applications for both vertical and horizontal tree systems. It wil also help in understanding the cost saving benefits of these systems over one another and possible future application of this technology in Asia.

The session will address the following:

  • Well abandonment in deepwater
  • Flow assurance
  • Intelligent completions
  • Simple completions/low cost intervention
  • Drill pipe risers

1100-1300

New and Emerging Technologies
Session Co-Chairpersons/Moderators
Kaustubh Dighe, Transocean Drilling Sdn. Bhd
Richard Russell, Halliburton

As one of the latest frontiers in the search for oil and gas, deepwater exploration and production continues to grow in importance. New and emerging deepwater technologies will have an even more relevant part to play in the future. In this session, some of the exciting new developments in deepwater technology will be presented. There will also be opportunity to discuss the application and effects of these and other new innovations.

1400-1530

Research Opportunities
Session Co-Chairpersons/Moderators
Frank McEwan, Schlumberger
Nigel Meany, AGR Petroleum (ME) Ltd.

The session will discuss support from regional research organisations amd joint industry projects.
