SPE Horizontal Well Stimulation Workshop
17–18 November 2009
Hilton Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, PA
Registration is now closed. There will be no on-site registration, and no waitlist is being formed. However, due to the overwhelming interest, SPE is considering conducting another workshop on the topic in 2010. To receive priority notice for the 2010 class, please fax the 2010 Workshop Interest Form to 1.972.852.9292. If the workshop is scheduled, you will be notified first. In addition, we invite you to attend the SPE Unconventional Gas Conference in Pittsburgh in February or other events on the SPE Meeting Calendar. |
As more and more operators go horizontal, one of the hottest gas plays in the country, the Marcellus Shale, is generating tremendous interest in the technology associated with horizontal well stimulation. There are still some aspects of its effectiveness that are not well understood, including:
- Toe-up or toe-down? What are best practices for horizontal drilling?
- Cased hole or open hole; mechanical, inflatable or swellable packers; regular or acid-soluble cement?
- What’s the optimum sized job for fluid volume, amount of sand, and what pump rates work best?
- Do all my perforations take fracturing? How many perforation clusters are best per stage, and what is the optimum distance between clusters?
- How does fresh water become brine, and why does so little water flow back?
- Why hard flowbacks hurt or help production? Can we expect sand to flow back?
- What does microseismic really reveal about fracture geometry? What can be done to get better data?
- What new technologies should be applied?
These questions and many more will be answered at this workshop. From the areas of geoscience to completions, operators and service providers will transfer this technology via real-life experiences and case histories. All aspects of the stimulation process, as well as completion strategies and practices will be covered.
