Approximately 80% of oil and gas fields can be characterised as mature  or highly depleted. Efforts to sustain production from these declining assets are continuously being pursued. With the age of many fields now ranging from 20-50 years, and with a 5-10 years gestation period for the broad acceptance of new technology, a field developed with, and still using, 15-year old technology is not uncommon.
