About this Workshop

Workshop Description

Stimulation has been performed in the North Sea since the late 1960s and has had a dramatic impact on the commercial viability of many assets. As yet however, the knowledge gained has not been summarized in a regional event. The focus of this first North Sea Stimulation Workshop will be on sharing the experience gained over the past years and setting the stage for overcoming future challenges. To achieve a fruitful discussion, workshop sessions have been designed to address both the very specific technical challenges that operators and service companies are confronted with and the fundamental questions pertaining to stimulation in an offshore environment. Since this is a first event, the committee considered it important that all types of stimulation should be covered. The participation of major and independent operating companies, service companies and governmental bodies will allow a wide sharing of views and opinions on how to proceed with optimizing stimulation treatments in economically challenging times and in a technically challenging offshore environment.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is designed for professionals in the oil and gas industry, and attendance is limited to 75 people.
Effective stimulation, especially in a high-cost offshore environment, requires a multidisciplinary approach. As such, technical experts and members of multidisciplinary teams involved in all aspects of North Sea stimulation are encouraged to attend. It would be preferable to have participation from operating and service companies, universities and research institutes.

Workshop Objectives and Deliverables

The objective of this workshop is to bring together a broad cross-section of people who are actively involved in North Sea Stimulation. Open discussion and friendly debate will be encouraged as we base-line where we are today, define the current and future stimulation challenges, and introduce new technologies that may have application in the North Sea. The ultimate goal of this workshop is to clearly define what is known and unknown, and to identify the most promising solutions which can be applied.

This workshop will aim to:

  • Summarize the stimulation techniques most commonly applied in major North Sea basins
  • Identify the stimulation challenges in new plays and developing projects
  • Debate the carbonate challenge: proppant frac, acid frac or matrix acidise?
  • Consider sandstone acidising techniques from other geographical areas (Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, South China Sea) which can be applied in North Sea reservoirs
  • Introduce the upcoming challenges of tight gas and basement rock stimulation
  • Address the differences between new well stimulation and re-stimulation of older wells
  • Explore the key constraints that are impacting the ability of companies to utilise stimulation in the North Sea
  • Identify technologies which will be sustainable if oil/gas prices drop
