Forum Session Topics and Descriptions

Session 1: Asset Integrity by Design

Chairpersons: Paul Hopmans, Shell; Hans Henrick Kogsbøll, Maersk Oil

Management of well integrity starts before the rig even reaches the well site. The process of selecting the correct design and constructing that design in the field covers many steps where decisions made at this early stage directly influence the long term integrity and viability of the well.

Here we will discuss some of these decisions and identify areas where we can make significant improvement through the application of novel technologies and problem areas that need focus across the industry to make the required step change.

Session 2: Present Wells – Surveillance-Prediction-Repair to Extend Well Life

Chairpersons: Steve Wilson, Petroleum Development Oman; Taher Ali, Baker Hughes

We are facing an increasing need to extend the life of the well while maximising recovery. These challenges command the development and implementation of advanced technologies to monitor the condition of the well, predict failures before they occur and carry out repairs economically and quickly.

How can we improve our methods of surveillance, prediction and repair to further extend the life of our current well stock beyond current limitations?

Session 3: Future Wells – Construction-Surveillance-Repair

Chairpersons: Peter Male, AFPC; Taher Ali, Baker Hughes

Wells need to be constructed with sustained well integrity in mind so that we develop petroleum reserves safely and economically. This session will discuss the way we design, construct and maintain our wells to ensure that well integrity risks are minimised and our requirements for future surveillance and potential repairs are met at the initial construct phase.

Session 4: New Field Design

Chairpersons: Nina Ringoen, Centrica Energy; Paul Hopmans, Shell

How does the new well look in the future? We need it to last longer, require fewer interventions and we need to understand the integrity status at all times. Design this well using the case study details and implementing new techniques, materials and ideas to take us beyond current practices and limitations.

Session 5: Operational Demands Beyond Original Well

Chairpersons: Muhammad A. Muqeem, Saudi Aramco; Terry Bussear, Baker Hughes

This session will be dedicated to defining true design life of wells, introduce new work over related technologies as well as management of well stock before abandonment. Frequently we change the well purpose during the design life, often without this change having been considered at initial well design. When these changes take place, how can we ensure continued integrity.

Session 6: Management of Abandonment

Chairpersons: Martin Mosley, Talisman; Peter Male, AFPC

When a well reaches the end of its useful life, the final step is abandonment. With exposure to a harsh environment, the well condition can often make this abandonment difficult. Section milling of casings, fishing to retrieve parted/corroded casings, difficulties in evaluating cement condition are frequent problems encountered when abandoning wells. Are current techniques the best way to manage abandonment in the future? Do we need to abandon all wells to the same isolation standards? How can we reduce the significant cost associated with abandonment? Are there alternatives to cement? Can we find alternative methods to squeeze an isolation material behind casings?

Session 7: Integrity Management Analogies from Other Industries

Chairpersons: Terry Bussear, Baker Hughes; Uriel Suaza, BP

The oil industry is not the only industry where management of integrity is important. Indeed, failure to manage the integrity of the hardware used in other industries can often have much more serious implications that a corroded casing, leaking tubing or poor cement job. How do these industries manage integrity where the stakes are so high? What techniques and technology can we adapt and apply to well integrity? How can we use experience gained elsewhere to accelerate our learning?

Session 8: Barrier Requirements – Where and Why?

Chairpersons: Hans Henrik Kogsbøll, Maersk Oil; Hani Qutob, Weatherford

If we were to design the first ever well today, not limited by current accepted practices of material selection and barrier placement, how would this well look? Do we need barriers where they are currently placed? Are SSSVs needed? What alternatives are there to annulus side outlet valves?

Session 9: Forum Review

Chairpersons: All Committee Members

A review of all previous sessions providing an overview of the previous 4 days work and an insight into the potential new ideas generated that are worth follow up.

Poster Session

Chairpersons: Steve Wilson, Petroleum Development Oman; Terry Bussear, Baker Hughes

In addition to the scheduled presentations, the forum programme will incorporate poster presentations. Poster presentations will allow participants an opportunity to present additional new ideas to those interested. The schedule for display of posters will be tied to the schedule of session discussion topics. Presentations on both research and field experience are solicited.
