About this Workshop

Abstract

The need to understand complex reservoir fluid properties is part of the entire lifecycle from exploration to mature asset management to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) to improved oil recovery (IOR). In addition to the highlighted complexities above, fluid data is shared with many disciplines beyond petroleum engineering, leading to fit for purpose analysis, granularity, and integration techniques. These disciplines include geochemistry, geo-operations, flow assurance, and processing.

This workshop will focus on new concepts in all elements of the development cycle, including exploration, reservoir and production management, EOR/IOR and even CO2 sequestration. Therefore, we are bringing leading industry experts together in multiple disciplines to share their experience on various aspects of reservoir fluids. The workshop agenda will focus on the following topics:

• CO2 EOR and CO2 sequestration
• Fluid specific issues and opportunities in unconventional reservoirs including shales, tight and low permeability gas and oil reservoirs
• Understanding of reactive systems and high temperature steam injection and other thermal methods
• Complex fluid equilibria, reservoir fluid distributions and equation of state (EOS) fluid characterization for such systems
• Fluid gradients and initialization and their tie-in with the reservoir architecture
• Multi-disciplinary integration and fluid management

Workshop Objectives and Deliverables

This comprehensive and focused 2½ day workshop will allow participants to:

• Review and critique the latest technical advancements associated reservoir fluid technologies and management for the full E&P life cycle: from exploration to EOR/IOR.
• Share experiences via case histories.
• Exchange/discuss ideas with fellow participants/experts from other companies, research institutes and universities.
• Form a stronger network in the area of reservoir fluids/PVT leading to future collaborative R&D/exchange of information at various levels.
• Tie-in with and complement the previous workshop held in March 2011

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for engineers, scientists and professionals who work with reservoir fluids and fluid data at various capacities, from hands on data generation/handling to an end-user of the data: such professionals include but are not limited to reservoir engineers, petroleum engineers, petroleum geologists, production engineers, flow assurance engineers, geochemists and process engineers. Experts from the laboratories are also welcome. Attendees are expected to actively participate in discussions and to share knowledge and ideas.

Workshop Guidelines

Workshops maximize the exchange of ideas among attendees and presenters through brief technical presentations followed by extended Q&A periods. Focused topics attract an informed audience eager to discuss issues critical to advancing both technology and best practices.

Many of the presentations are in the form of case studies, highlighting engineering achievements and lessons learned. In order to stimulate frank discussion, no proceedings are published and members of the press are not invited to attend.

Documentation

Proceedings from the workshop will not be published; therefore, formal papers and handouts are not requested of speakers or panel members. A URL containing released copies of the workshop presentations will be available to attendees following the workshop.

Commercialism

In remaining consistent with workshop objectives and SPE guidelines, commercialism in presentations will not be permitted.  Company logos should be used only to indicate the affiliation of the presenter(s).

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Attendees will receive 2.0 CEUs.

One CEU equals 10 contact hours of participation.  CEUs will be awarded through SPE Professional Development for participation and completion of SPE workshop.  A permanent record of a participant’s involvement and awarding of CEUs will be maintained by SPE.
