The Macondo incident raised public and political awareness of drilling activities in deepwater resulting in a moratorium on deepwater drilling in the United States. The industry’s ability to mitigate and manage risk as well as its ability to safely exploit hydrocarbons in extreme and ecologically sensitive environments came under scrutiny.
