Produced water, which includes that water produced during the initial flowback process, is an undesirable and costly byproduct of oil and gas production. It is one of the "continually produced" substances in our industry that poses environmental risks. Disposing of produced or flowback water can add significantly to operating costs.
This forum will look at the issue of managing produced water from two different perspectives. The first will be a look-ahead at technologies being developed to minimize production of formation water to the surface. This may include in-situ water shutoff, profile control in injection wells, or downhole separation and injection. The second perspective will be how to handle water after it is produced. Look-ahead technologies might include water disposal techniques, corrosion mitigation technologies, and water treatment systems - which have the potential to make water a reusable product. Production engineers, drilling and completions engineers, environmental specialists, and facilities engineers will collaborate on prospective techniques for managing produced water.
The wrap-up session will open the discussion on future strategies, technologies and programs to address water challenges identified throughout the course of this forum. We will document how SPE and its members can best support environmental and business sustainability regarding water issues.
SPE Forums offer an exclusive opportunity to interact with innovators, foremost professionals and leading technologists. The objective is to create a collaborative, idea-generating forum that stimulates new ideas and innovation about future challenges facing the E&P industry.
Participants at SPE Forums are selected by the Forum Steering Committee based on the ability to contribute to facilitated discussions of the topic. Participants are encouraged to come prepared to contribute their experience and knowledge, not to be spectators or students
