Workshop Description

Abstract

Growth
Smart fields or digital fields refers to new work processes and ways of performing oil and gas exploration and production, which has been facilitated by enhanced integrated business workflows and new information and communication technology. Valuable data generated from the smart/digital field is fed into integrated automated workflows and knowledge management systems, which deliver it to respective personnel for better decision making processes. Deployment of smart/digital fields has shown significant growth in terms of real-time optimisation of the whole value chain, from long term management of the oil reservoir, through capacity allocations in pipe networks and calculations of the net present value of the produced oil.

Technology
Rapid enhancement of various technologies in this area is mainly driven by operations research, knowledge management and continual improvement of information systems whilst supported by business transformation in the organisations to ensure long term sustainability of oil and gas industry. Technology integration is a crucial challenges faced by producers because, it is essential to the success of any smart/digital field. New approaches to work identified throughout technology implementation helps to improve metrics such as productivity, profitability, safety, employee retention and overall competitiveness.

Capability
Finding the right capabilities, skills and know-how are essential for developing operational intelligence made possible through smart/digital field concepts. Companies are giving full attention in building capabilities to enhance the whole production chain and reducing functional silos around disciplines such as drilling, production, reservoir management, etc. which could lead to inefficiency. Isolation of these capabilities may have adverse impact especially on performance especially when new engineers and technicians who have less operational experience and analytical skills are asked to make decisions across multiple domains.

HSE & Security
HSE and security improvement had also been acknowledged as key benefits of smart/digital field deployment. It is given the highest priority in the industry.   Reducing the exposure to equipment failure and, detection of gas or water production issues reduces the risk of workplace injury. Norway, for instance, is mandating that all companies planning new offshore oil and gas developments first consider a complete subsea infrastructure that is monitored from land using advanced command centres with minimal direct human intervention.

Change Management
On top of all the key elements discussed above, the acceptance of new ways of working by employees and staff is a crucial element to ensure the success of smart/digital field deployment. It can be addressed through proper Change Management programs deployed prior, during and post smart/digital field deployment.  The Change Management programs must institutionalise the new ways of working, leverage the capability development, and establish feedback loops and continuous improvement strategies.

Workshop Objectives

The objective of the workshop is to enable operators, service companies and other organisations to keep abreast with the latest update on smart/digital fields by various parties including:

  1. industry trends in smart field/digital field
  2. challenges and future technology needs
  3. success stories and lesson learned from current projects in managing changes in the organisation
  4. Skills and resources required to highlight the importance of new organisational behaviour specifically in addressing skills integration, training and competency.

In addition, it provides the opportunity for sharing of best practices related to building a business case for smart/digital field, effectively managing risk and uncertainty to accelerate the pace of smart/digital field’s growth and ensuring incremental return on investment.

The workshop will be of particular interest to active practitioners or key service providers in the upstream business of oil & gas industry. The Applied Technology Workshop (ATW) is meant for young professionals and experienced individuals who will actively share their experience and contribute to the discussion.

Workshop Guidelines

Documentation

1. Proceedings will not be published; therefore, formal papers and handouts are not expected from speakers.
2. Work in progress, new ideas, and interesting projects are sought.
3. Professionally-prepared visual aids are not required; handwritten viewgraphs are entirely acceptable.
4. Note-taking by participants is encouraged. However, to ensure free and open discussions, no formal records will be kept.

Workshop Deliverables

  • The committee will prepare a full report containing the highlights of the workshop discussions. This report will be circulated to all attendees. A one-page summary will be prepared by the workshop co-chairpersons, which will be posted on the SPE website, and published in the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT), if space permits. The copyright of the summary report will belong to SPE.
  • PowerPoint presentation materials will be posted on a specific SPE URL address after the workshop. Provision of the materials by the discussion leaders will signify their permission for SPE to do so.

Commercialism

In keeping with workshop objectives and the SPE mission, excessive commercialism in posters or presentations will not be permitted. Company logos must be limited to the title slide and used only to indicate the affiliation of the presenter and others involved in the work.

Attendance Certificate

All attendees will receive an attendance certificate attesting to their participation at the workshop. This certificate will be provided in exchange for a completed workshop questionnaire.

Continuing Education Units

This workshop qualifies for SPE Continuing Education Units (CEU) at the rate of 0.1 CEU per hour of the workshop.

General and detailed accommodation information will be forwarded to registrants with the attendee package prior to the scheduled workshop in October 2013.

Dress Code

Casual clothing is recommended. The workshop atmosphere is informal.

Transportation/Visa

Delegates are advised to book their domestic/international airline tickets early from their city/country to Bali, Indonesia. Further detailed transportation information will be available and included in the attendee package, which will be sent to registrants in October 2013.

International delegates travelling to Indonesia must be in possession of passports valid for at least six (6) months with proof of onward passage, either return or through tickets. Visa requirements depend on country of origin. Please check with your travel agent or the Indonesian Embassy on regulations relating to immigration/visa before your departure.
