About this workshop

Abstract

This is the second edition of the very successful Applied Technology Workshop (ATW) on “Shale Gas” held in May 2011 in Beijing, China. Following up on the stimulating discussions generated at the workshop in 2011, this workshop addresses the current challenges that the energy industry is facing.

In 2012, China completed the attribution of 19 blocks proposed in the 2nd shale gas licensing round. 14 of these blocks are located in the provinces surrounding the hydrocarbon-rich Sichuan basin. The blocks were acquired by 15 "new energy companies" that altogether committed to spend $2 billion for exploration over 3 years. Tight gas and shale gas will definitely play a major role in the coming decade to solving China’s energy demand and environmental control equation.

Workshop Focus and Objectives

This workshop focuses on exploration and development challenges for shale gas in Asia Pacific. Among other aspects the following key topics will be covered: Particularities of shale gas E&P challenges in China, Australia, and India; what are the effects of the large tectonic stress in the underground formations in the Sichuan Province, and can technology help overcome these adverse effects? What advances have been made in the last two years on exploration technology, such as for example seismic imaging, or core & log-based formation evaluation, that could have a favourable impact on exploration in Asia Pacific? Is "finding the sweet spot" using 3D seismic still a dream? What are the specifics in China, Australia, and India related to shale gas economics, and how do they compare to the US? Have we made some progress in the forecasting of shale gas well production, and how to maximise well productivity with completion design and execution parameters? This workshop will also examine the key factors with particular focus on how to capitalise on the North Americas experiences to develop Shale Gas resources globally. Sharing best practices and discussing different views will be the central objective of the workshop.

This workshop is designed for all subsurface disciplines: Reservoir Engineers, Production Engineers, Petroleum Engineers, Drilling and Completion Engineers, Geophysicists, Geologists, Academics, Researchers, Supervisors, Managers, Government Representatives and Energy Policy Makers.

Documentation

1. Proceedings will not be published; therefore, formal papers and handouts are not expected from speakers.
2. Work in progress, new ideas, and interesting projects are sought.
3. Professionally-prepared visual aids are not required; handwritten viewgraphs are entirely acceptable.
4. Note-taking by participants is encouraged. However, to ensure free and open discussions, no formal records will be kept.

Workshop Deliverables

  • The committee will prepare a full report containing the highlights of the workshop discussions. This report will be circulated to all attendees. A one-page summary will be prepared by the workshop cochairpersons, which will be posted on the SPE website, and published in the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT), if space permits. The copyright of the summary report will belong to SPE.
  • PowerPoint presentation materials will be posted on a specific SPE URL address after the workshop. Provision of the materials by the discussion leaders will signify their permission for SPE to do so.

Commercialism

In keeping with ATW objectives and the SPE mission, excessive commercialism in posters or presentations will not be permitted. Company logos must be limited to the title slide and used only to indicate the affiliation of the presenter and others involved in the work.

Attendance Certificate

All attendees will receive an attendance certificate attesting to their participation at the workshop. This certificate will be provided in exchange for a completed Workshop Questionnaire.

Continuing Education Units

This workshop qualifies for SPE Continuing Education Units (CEU) at the rate of 0.1 CEU per hour of the ATW.

General and detailed accommodation information will be forwarded to registrants with the attendee package prior to the scheduled workshop in mid-June 2013.

Dress Code

Casual clothing is recommended. The workshop atmosphere is informal.

Transportation/Visa

Delegates are advised to book their international/domestic airline tickets early from their country/city to Chengdu, China. Further detailed transportation information will be available and included in the attendee package, which will be sent to registrants mid-June 2013.

International delegates travelling to China must be in possession of passports valid for at least six (6) months upon arrival, and must hold a visa issued by the appropriate Chinese officials prior to departure from your home country. Official invitations to apply for Chinese visas are available from the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). Visa requirements depend on country of origin. Please check with your travel agent or the Chinese Embassy on regulations relating to immigration/visa before your departure.
