About this workshop

Abstract

Drilling systems automation is a fast-advancing development of a new technology application in the upstream oil and gas business. SPE’s Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section (DSATS) is tasked with supporting the growth and implementation of drilling automation, linking surface and downhole equipment with predictive models for better well construction.  We invite you to actively participate in a dual track workshop that will examine both the technical and business issues required to successfully deploy this new enabler for safer and more efficient drilling.  

DSATS has coordinated two very successful previous workshops in 2010 and 2012. The theme of this year’s workshop will focus on detailed technology implementation and business-level discussions. This will be a double stream workshop which will enable participants to involve themselves in the most appropriate sessions for their specific interests.

The topics covered will be taken from current work group activities and known industry challenges for implementation of drilling systems automation.

The technology stream is anticipated to include:

  • Drilling a stand with automated controls
  • Standards and architecture

The business stream is anticipated to include:

  • Business solutions to advance implementation
  • Reliability assurance techniques

Each stream is envisaged to process in sessions of presentations and group work culminating in a sharing between all sessions in both streams on what has been learnt.

Workshop Guidelines

Workshop Format

Workshops maximize the exchange of ideas among attendees and presenters through brief technical ‎presentations followed by extended Q&A periods. Focused topics attract an informed audience eager to ‎discuss issues critical to advancing both technology and best practices.‎
Many of the presentations are in the form of case studies, highlighting engineering achievements and ‎lessons learned. In order to stimulate frank discussion, no proceedings are published and members of the ‎press are not invited to attend.‎

Documentation

Proceedings from the workshop will not be published; therefore, formal papers and handouts are not ‎requested of speakers or panel members. A URL containing released copies of the workshop presentations ‎will be available to attendees following the workshop. A workshop summary will be prepared by the ‎technical program committee for public release, but no other information.‎

Commercialism

In remaining consistent with workshop objectives and SPE guidelines, commercialism in presentations will ‎not be permitted. Company logos should be used only to indicate the affiliation of the presenter(s).‎

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Attendees will receive 2.4 CEUs.‎

One CEU equal 8 contact hours of participation. CEUs are awarded through SPE Professional Development ‎for participation and completion of SPE workshop. A permanent record of a participant’s involvement and ‎awarding of CEUs will be maintained by SPE. ‎
