About this Workshop

Abstract

Following an explosion of hype and speculation in recent years, nanotechnology is now driving and enabling real advances across many aspects of the oil and gas industry, with exciting research and successful applications being reported in a growing body of literature. As well as driving developments in products to enhance performance and solve problems in key areas such as drilling and completions, nanotechnology is enabling techniques to improve our fundamental understanding of reservoir mechanics and the nanoscale processes that lead to various flow assurance and enhanced oil recovery challenges.

This workshop will explore developments and applications of nanotechnology in delivering enhanced capabilities across a wide range of areas including reservoir characterisation, enhanced oil recovery, drilling and completion, flow assurance, and asset integrity and safety.

Unlike in other sectors where nanotechnology is being exploited, such as medicine and electronics, a particular challenge for the oil industry is that in most cases the nanotechnology has to be deployed very remotely, and in very demanding and complex environments. To address such issues in the successful implementation of nanotechnology, a key theme of this workshop will be the bringing together of fundamental insights gained from nanotechnology-enhanced reservoir characterisation, operational requirements and observations, and proposing nanotechnology-inspired solutions.

Aims and Objectives

This comprehensive workshop aims to develop a holistic appreciation of oilfield nanotechnology by bringing together researchers and practitioners from across the industry to explore the current state-of-the-art approaches to understand the major challenges. A key goal is to identify synergies where nanotechnologies applied in different areas can be combined or adapted and applied in new solutions. The workshop will provide an excellent networking opportunity, and participants should leave with new ideas about how nanotechnology can be deployed and developed for efficient oil and gas exploration and recovery.

Who Should Attend

The nanotechnology world clearly brings to the E&P industry exciting new opportunities and challenges. This workshop is designed for scientists, engineers, and managers who carry out various E&P activities, and offers the opportunity to present and discuss their most recent advances in nanotechnology application such as:

  • Reservoir characterisation, shale gas/oil exploration and production
  • Enhanced oil recovery and conformance control techniques
  • Flow assurance and well stimulation techniques
  • Drilling, completion, tracers, and waterfloods
  • Colloids and advanced materials

Workshop Guidelines

Format

Two-and-a-half days include informal sessions, with a number of short presentations, case studies, breakout discussions, and an evening welcome reception on Monday, 23 June and dinner on Wednesday, 25 June. Full details will be provided with the registration pack, which will be sent in May.

Attendance

75–85 delegates, from relevant disciplines with proven experience and/or knowledge of the subject areas being covered, are expected to attend.

SPE welcomes posters at this event. If you would like to display a poster and share your expertise with the attendees of this workshop, please submit a brief description of your proposed topic upon registration. There is no dedicated poster session in this workshop; instead, posters will be displayed throughout.

Continuing Education Units

The workshop qualifies for SPE Continuing Education Units (CEU), at the rate of 0.1 CEU per hour of the workshop.

Scribe's Report

The steering committee will appoint a scribe to make a full report of the workshop, summarising all presentations and discussion. This report will be circulated to all attendees. The copyright of the scribe’s report will belong to SPE.

Attendance Certificate

All attendees will receive a certificate from SPE attesting to their participation.

Cancellation Policy

Written notice received 30 days before the starting date of the workshop entitles registrants to a 50% refund. There will be no refund for cancellations received after this time but alternate delegates will be welcomed.
