India has an estimated sedimentary area of 3.14 million sq. km comprising 26 basins, of which 1.35 million sq. km area is in deepwater in bathymetry > 200 m. Of the total of 254 blocks awarded (from 360 offered) in the 9 NELP rounds so far, 81 have been in the deepwater. Of the total deepwater area, 78% of the area has been appraised in water depths of < 400 m compared to only 51% in water depths > 400 m. Total hydrocarbon resource volume in deepwater area is estimated to be 7000 MMT (O+OEG).
