About this workshop

Abstract

Each project, by definition, is unique. In terms of magnitude and complexity, projects can range from the small to the large and from the relatively straight forward to the overly complex. Regardless of project dimension, Project Management practices safeguard against value leakages to safely deliver promised returns to the stakeholders. While Project Management standards advocate the application of linear approach in managing all types of projects, in practice, this alone may no longer be sufficient to manage the growing complexities of today’s capital projects.

The oil and gas industry today faces increasing challenges to meet growing world demand for energy. Oil and gas companies struggle to find new and quicker methods in developing resources that are harder to access. In a world which is fast becoming more interconnected, interdependent, and interrelated, industry players must expand their boundaries and boldly venture into unchartered territories, creating partnerships and alliances while adapting innovative business practices and new management paradigms. All these result in increasing complexity in the way we do business and similarly, in the projects being implemented.

Complex projects are generally accepted to mean projects that are non-linear. This workshop will examine such complexities associated with large scale development and capital investment; multiple stakeholders with varying expectations; complicated interface management;  new technologies; challenging resources and logistic constraints; aggressive schedule; marginal economics; business and socio-political risks. The workshop will also provide a platform for the sharing of such experiences and the innovative approaches or practices that have been tried and tested throughout the Project Management fraternity, in facing and managing today’s challenges.

The Project Management fraternity could tremendously benefit from the collective experiences in managing complex projects, throughout the industry.

Objectives

This workshop will provide an avenue for participants to share industry best practices, innovative techniques, case histories, and network with other petroleum industry project professionals. Participants will go through the logical progression of an integrated project life cycle, utilising innovative integrated project management approach to ensure successful delivery of projects in today’s highly challenging world.

Who Should Attend

This is a limited attendance workshop designed for decision makers, current and future project directors, project managers, team leaders, engineers, and other professionals involved in managing and delivering petroleum business projects. Participants should come prepared to actively participate and share their experiences on all aspects of Integrated Project Management.

Workshop Guidelines

Documentation

1. Proceedings will not be published; therefore, formal papers and handouts are not expected from speakers.
2. Work in progress, new ideas, and interesting projects are sought.
3. Note-taking by participants is encouraged. However, to ensure free and open discussions, no formal records will be kept.

Workshop Deliverables

  • The committee will prepare a full report containing the highlights of the Workshop discussions. This report will be circulated to all attendees.
  • PowerPoint presentation materials will be posted on specific SPE URL address after the Workshop. Provision of the materials by the discussion leaders will signify their permission for SPE to do so.

Commercialism

In keeping with the workshop objectives and the SPE mission, excessive commercialism in posters or presentations will not be permitted. Company logos must be limited to the title slide and used only to indicate the affiliation of the presenter and others involved in the work.

Attendance Certificate

All attendees will receive an attendance certificate attesting to their participation at the workshop. This certificate will be provided in exchange for a completed Workshop Attendee Survey.

Continuing Education Units

This workshop qualifies for SPE Continuing Education Units (CEU) at the rate of 0.1 CEU per hour of the workshop.

Dress Code

Casual clothing is recommended. The workshop atmosphere is informal.

Transportation/Visa

Delegates are advised to book their international/domestic airline tickets early from their country/city to Bali, Indonesia. Further detailed transportation information will be available on the Workshop website by January 2014.

All travellers to Indonesia must be in possession of passports valid for at least six (6) months with proof of onward passage, either return, or through tickets. Contact your local travel agent for information on visa requirements to Indonesia .
