Education and Teachers' Day

Tuesday, 23 October • 1000 - 1515 hours • Meeting Room 8

Education Day

The Education Day is an initiative to introduce high school students to the different disciplines of petroleum engineering, and the industry in general. Around 60 students with keen interest in science, who may consider majoring in petroleum and related engineering programmes when they enter university, will be invited to attend.

A number of industry professionals, ranging from Young Professionals to experienced Industry Experts will be invited to share their experience with students through talks on topics of general interest and relevance to the industry. Following the talks, the students will be given a guided tour of the exhibition area. They will be able to see a first-hand account of the high-end technology used by industry practitioners and the sophisticated software available for solving many engineering problems. It is hoped that they will leave the conference with a better understanding of what petroleum engineers do and their role in the broader community. Equally important, they will also become aware that a petroleum engineering career is full of challenges, teamwork and responsibilities.

Teachers' Day

Teachers' Day is an initiative that incorporates science, technology and energy topics to be introduced into the classroom through creative teaching and fun interactive activities. High school teachers will be invited to attend this programme with an objective of introducing them to the oil and gas industry. In return, they will share their experience gained through this programme with students exposing them to make a career majoring in petroleum and related engineering program.

This programme will be held simultaneously with Education Day, where there will be a separate breakout session designed for teachers who will receive comprehensive, objective information about the scientific concepts of energy and its importance, while discovering the world of oil and gas exploration. The session will also be used to gauge the perception held by teachers and their students about the industry, from which further engagement with schools can be formulated in the future to enhance the interest of students and teachers alike.
