By 2030, the global challenge will be to meet a projected 40-percent increase in energy demand, dominated by fossil fuels and unconventional resources. Subsequently, a substantial increase in professional knowledge, technology breakthrough and investments will be required to keep up with this demand. The oil and gas industry suffers from a shortage of mid-career professionals. Therefore, it is necessary that our experienced professionals balance the act of ensuring project quality while mentoring young professionals up to "stand-alone" quality. Equally, our young professionals must take charge of their development and seek from those who know. To succeed, soft skills will be as important as technical skills.
The projects in the Asia Pacific region are mostly either under development (young) or in decline (mature) with both facing very different technical, environmental, regulatory and financial challenges. The decline of major conventional oil fields and the rise in energy demand mean that the spare production capacity that once cushioned prices will be gone, ushering in an era of volatile market swings.
Directed to address issues related to the transfer of knowledge and exploring ways to adapt to rapid technological advancement while fulfilling social responsibility, this stimulating Executive Plenary Session will bring together the experience and insights of industry leaders and experts to beat the challenges faced by the industry as a whole through the conference theme "Maximising the Mature, Elevating the Young."
