Challenges Developing the Giant Caspian Basin Carbonate Reservoirs
Mike Allison, General Manager Reservoir Management
Chevron Global Upstream and Gas
Among the largest publicly owned International Oil Companies, Chevron has a broad and diverse portfolio of upstream assets, including significant interests in carbonate reservoirs. This set of carbonate reservoirs presents particular development challenges, taken together representative of those faced by industry. From this perspective, a number of challenges will be discussed, as well as technical and organizational approaches pursued. Views on important remaining challenges will be shared.

Mike Allison is a 1976 graduate of the University of Texas, Austin, with a B.S. in
Petroleum Engineering. Mike began his Chevron career as a Production Engineer in Bakersfield, CA, in 1976, and has held a variety of US domestic and international
engineering and management positions of increasing responsibility.
In 2003, Mike was appointed to the position of GM, Business Development and Planning, for Chevron’s international upstream, and in 2007, GM of Reservoir Management for Chevron’s global upstream.
New advances in carbonate reservoir characterization: Solutions and remaining challenges
Mohammed Badri, Managing Director
Schlumberger Dhahran Carbonate Research Center
Carbonate reservoirs contain 70% of the world oil reserves and 40% of the gas reservoirs. They are often described as being difficult or unpredictable. Despite years of field observation and extensive production experience, the industry still has limited understanding of the fundamental petrophysical properties such as rock porosity, mineralogy, and heterogeneity. The level of carbonate complexity at various scales require new generation of interpretation tools to enable the integration of various complex measurements to improve our understanding of carbonates characteristics.
In the current practice of saturation estimation, Archie’s equation requires the determination of two exponents: the so-called cementation exponent "m" and saturation exponent "n." A value of 1.8 instead of 2.0 for m and n will easily returns several additional billions of dollars in reserves. Rock textural models and mineralogy identification are critical to the estimation of the cementation factor "m." The behavior of the complex dielectric permittivity at different frequencies depends on the chemical composition, density, porosity, water saturation, presence of cavities, vugs and micro-fractures, crystalline structure and rock lithology, and, distribution of components inside the rock.
Oil recovery in carbonates requires first to understand the porosity systems, wettability and saturation. Low Salinity or tuned salinity water improves recovery, but the fundamental mechanism is not yet explained in carbonates. The oil recovery by CO2 or chemical will influence the interfacial tension (IFT) and improves mobility of the oil remaining in the pore space. New advances of these challenges will be addressed in this presentation.

Transportation Infrastructure is a Key to Unlocking Caspian Resources
Norman Hansen, General Manager
Transportation and Marketing TCO.
The discussion will share a bit of the history of Chevron in Eurasia and a view of the current and future crude oil export challenges from this landlocked region. Reliably and cost effectively transporting produced hydrocarbons to world markets is of critical importance, which is why transportation is such a major focus in the Caspian energy business. Growing production in the region drives the need for increased transportation capacity, and early planning for export routes is essential. Views on current and future transportation challenges will be shared in the presentation.
