Plenary Session 1: Ensuring the Integrity of our Assets and Operations—Key Aspects of Prevention

Moderator: Volkert Zijlker, E&P Senior Consultant

Senior European Operator: Reinhart Samhaber, OMV
Senior HSE Manager: Paolo Linzi, Eni
Senior European Regulator: Jan de Jong, Inspector General SODM and Chair of NSOAF
European Commission (DG Energy): David Schreib

E&P organisations manage a complex portfolio of facilities which pose risks that can result in events ranging from minor injuries, to those, involving a loss of asset integrity, which can result in fatalities, damage to the environment, asset loss and major reputational impacts. While the industry has made substantial progress in reducing the high frequency, lower consequence incidents, recent events in the Gulf of Mexico, Timor Sea and elsewhere have focused attention on its ability to manage the low frequency, high consequence risks.

This session considers how asset integrity is managed within the E&P industry. It focuses on the prevention of major incidents, especially process safety incidents. The session explores how process safety management has evolved in Europe over the past two decades, both from a company and regulatory viewpoint. It considers the considerable practicable and technical challenges facing E&P companies that have to manage asset integrity across a range of different operations, countries and regulatory regimes. The role of the HSE professional in supporting the needs of the company is highlighted.
