Ahead of his keynote presentation at the SPE/ICoTA Coiled Tubing and Well Intervention Conference and Exhibition, the speaker gave us a glimpse of what to expect.
Q. What do you hope professionals learn from your presentation?
A. Removing the hype behind IoT and big data while framing the challenges for our industry in a way that these technologies are enablers for a strong value proposition.
Q. Your presentation is about “Codifying Knowledge in the New Oil Era.” Can you expand on that–what is the new oil era, and how will data/coding impact it?
A. There are many aspects that have hindered innovation in the oil and gas industry, particularly in the drilling sector. In today’s environment, all inefficiencies carried from many years of incremental improvements (on design, quality, performance, etc) is no longer tolerable, e.g. the approach of “more of the same but bigger” is not longer viable.
One of the challenges is that most drilling knowledge is in the head of very experienced people, but not codified in a way that can be passed to the next generation via formal methods (beyond on-the-job training). Codifying knowledge means synthesizing information from data, and knowledge from information, and then feeding that back into machines and people to execute the drilling processes.
Q. The topics you touch on in your presentation: IoT, big data, smart/connected products – what does the future of our industry look like when those are taken into consideration?
A. In a nutshell, I see a high quality, sustainable and value delivering industry. I also see a world where system engineering drives the engineering foundation of the industry.
Q. Anything else you’d like to add?
A. The low oil season is a big enabler for innovation to happen. I hope the framework I will be sharing will help future innovators to seize this opportunity.
