Executive Plenary Session: What Does Efficiency Mean?

Swings in the oil and gas market have a substantial impact on the drilling industry, and during the last couple of years, they have taken a larger toll than before. Despite this, the industry continues to find ways to acclimate its practices and technologies to enable it to sustain long downswings. One of the areas of improvement that this industry has seen and continues to build on, is embedding better efficiencies in its approaches, practices, and technologies.

This panel will discuss ways the industry can achieve better efficiencies through actual examples of improved partnerships, technical and operations best practices, technology development, and other means to lift its position during different phases of the market.

Panel Session 1: The Risk of Getting Efficiencies Wrong
Moderator(s) Ryan Seike, Country Sales Manager, Baker Hughes, a GE Company
Speaker(s) Majed Al-Awadhi, Vice President, Drilling Operations, Offshore (ZADCO), NDC; Erwin Kröll, Senior Vice President Middle East and Africa, OMV; Dan Shute, President, Volant; Gokturk Tunc, Vice President Technology, Land Rigs, Schlumberger; Reid Warriner, Executive Vice President - Drilling Group, OiLSERV

Today’s global industries and businesses are driven by profitability, primarily through efficiencies and cost control. The oil and gas industry has dramatically improved over the past 30 years and has been able to access and drill reserves which were earlier thought impossible, mainly because of technologies and process efficiencies. There is no ceiling for efficiency. However, when pushed beyond logical or scientific reasoning, the so-called efficiencies unintentionally transform to cutting corners, leading to unwanted results, and even catastrophic HSE incidents and major unplanned expenditures.

This panel will be discussing what the industry has done and is doing to ensure efficiencies are implemented based on scientific and logical decision-making, rather than pure financial cost control, to mitigate any risk that might be associated getting efficiencies wrong.

Panel Session 2: Building on Today’s Technology for Tomorrow’s Market
Moderator(s) Adib Al-Mumen, Manager Workover Engineering Department, Saudi Aramco
Speaker(s) Ali Bin Ali, General Supervisor, Gas Drilling Engineering, Saudi Aramco; Nick Baker, Executive Vice-President, Petrolink; Lance Marklinger, VP Global Sales, Weatherford; Rene Ritter, Global Technology Director - Drilling Services, Baker Hughes, a GE Company

The influence of technology in the oil and gas industry is invaluable, especially in a low oil price environment like the one going on. Technology has helped the industry go through difficult times during the past couple of years by increasing efficiencies and reducing cost. The role of technology, as seen during these tight conditions, shall extend beyond market slowdowns to better and more stable industry times. The industry must continue to rely on new and breakthrough technologies to be able to deliver energy to the world.

This panel will discuss what the industry is doing to ensure technology continues to play the role it has in the past and to overcome future challenges driven by an unpredictable energy market.
