Session 1: Panel Session - Creating Awareness: Standards, Protocols, Regulations
Session Chairpersons Suresh Sinnappu, Baker Hughes; Stephanie Chow, Schlumberger

The journey towards decarbonisation entails collective effort from all involved stakeholders. With the industry moving towards a greener operation, this panel session will discuss the fundamental topics that are keys to success, such as:

  • Realising the importance of GHG emission reduction across the value chain and the urgency to act
  • Behavioural change in the organisation to drive green projects or initiatives
  • Standards for GHG emission reporting and target setting
  • Regulating greenhouse gas emissions and examples of policies in place
  • How can the industry drive awareness and operationalise efforts within the standards, protocols, and regulations?

Session 2: Pain Points - How do we measure emission in drilling operations? (Operators' Perspective)
Session Chairpersons Gabriel Higuera, BP; Mikkel Sondergaard Pedersen, Maersk Drilling

This session will have operators to share not only their measuring approaches (including metrics such as Ton CO₂/contracted day, or Ton CO₂/drilled metre) but also the various activities and emission categories their companies consider. Typically, operators report wells in scope 1 and 2 emissions and include those associated with the combustion of diesel used for power generation in MODUs (power), combustion of reservoir fluids during flaring (such as well test and clean up), un-combusted methane from flaring (methane), logistics-related emissions, and emissions associated with integrated drilling and productions facilities. Liquids burning and methane venting from flowbacks and interventions will also need to be included.

The expectation is to encourage the participants to share best practices, analysis methodologies, engineering calculations/models, measurement technologies (Coriolis meters, sensing technology at sites), semi-quantitative approaches, and validation methods using relevant industry standards, so we can all collectively benefit, and enhance our ability to manage our emission performance against the industry/companies targets.

Discussion Leaders:

  • Obstacles We Face, Solutions We Provided in Malaysia - PETRONAS Perspective from Wells, Mohd Abshar Mohd Nor, Avinash Kishore Kumar, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd
  • Measuring Emissions to Make a Difference, Patrick Keatinge, BP

Session 3: Pain Points - How do we measure emission in drilling operations? (Service Companies' Perspective)
Session Chairpersons Avinash Kishore Kumar, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd; Scott Hastings, Sapura Energy

This session will cover the pain points encountered and experienced by various drilling contractor, service contractor and other associated value chain in supporting and achieving the global net zero GHG emission target especially set by operators and countries. It is generally observed that small-medium players are moving at a slower pace in setting the carbon footprint reduction and sustainability target compared with the major players in drilling industry, and this gap is further divided between countries where these players operate. Business decision to remain competitive is one of the greatest challenges for these players to subscribe into the sustainability agenda of the oil and gas industry. The session will raise these challenges, trigger solutions, and raise the bar for the entire drilling industry value chain.

Discussion Leaders:

  • VELESTO's Sustainability Initiatives - Challenges and Opportunities, Thirapan Kangwansura, Velesto Drilling Sdn Bhd
  • Maersk Drilling - Hybrid Rigs: Project, Challenges and Results, Jan Hoffner, Maersk Drilling
  • Potential & Kinetic Energy Efficiency, Eoin Christie, Sapura Energy Berhad
  • Drilling Services Technology Solutions as a Pathway To Lower Emissions, Alexander Pavlichenko, Baker Hughes
