Panel Session 1: Meeting Current and Future Energy Challenges

Tuesday, 8 June, 1400-1600 hours

Convention Hall 1

Our industry's key challenge is to meet the increasing energy demand for global economic growth. The energy challenge could be characterised in the following ways:

  • The energy demand is expected to increase. Recent IEA studies indicate that energy demand is growing by 50% by 2050, fueled by rapid economic growth in, amongst others, China and India.
  • Fossil fuels will continue to dominate with some contribution of alternative energy sources like coal, wind, solar and biofuels.
  • The use of more energy and the increasing share of coal in the energy mix will further raise CO2 emissions. This means that we also have to find solutions for CO2 to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.
  • Significant financial investment is needed to bring on new projects online and improve efficiency and production of older, mature fields.
  • Technology and teamwork are key for our industry.

These are real challenges that raise concerns, however this is also an exciting time in the history of our industry. With this as the backdrop, the panel of distinguished speakers will each outline how their respective Company, in conjunction with the host government, should be doing to address these challenges.

Panel Session 2: Management of Technology and Innovation

Wednesady, 9 June, 1030-1200 hours

Convention Hall 2A

The oil and gas industry continues to generate opportunities via technological innovations to enhance its success in locating, extracting, and transporting oil and gas supplies to meet global demand.  Our business today is very much a “high-tech” business.  Technology has given us the ability to supply energy from sources once considered impossible to access.  This is illustrated best in today's ultimate recoverable of conventional oil worldwide that is 50 percent more than the estimate 20 years ago.  Our industry has a track record of innovating, integrating and deploying new technologies, so we are well to tackle current and future challenges, for example, a powerful enabler of cost reduction, especially in a high cost environment.  These have required massive investments of capital (both human and money), and time in research and development. Some of these have been possible through collaboration and partnership between IOC, NOC, service companies and academic institutions.

Speakers will address different aspects of funding, nurturing and building capability in order to continue to push the envelope of technology innovation and produce more hydrocarbons, especially from unconventional deposits of oil and gas, and the changing roles between IOCs, NOCs and service companies.

Session Coordinator: Lim Min-Teong, Regional Technology, Performance & Planning Manager, Asia Pacific, Shell EP Intl. Ltd.

Session Co-Chairpersons: Ford Brett, President, PetroSkills; Zhang Fengjiu, Deputy Chief Engineer, CNOOC Ltd.

Session Moderator: Ganesh Thakur, Vice President, Global Advisor & Chevron Fellow, Chevron Energy Technology Company

Speakers:

  • Stephen M. Greenlee, President, ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company
  • Jan Age Greger, Leading Geophysicist, Statoil
  • Fang Chaoliang, Deputy Director General, R&D Dept., CNPC
  • Jiang Wei, General Manager, Drilling & Completion Dept., CNOOC
  • Derek Mathieson, President Technology and Product Line, Baker Hughes Inc.
  • Bruce Levell, Vice President Emerging Technologies, Chief Scientist-Geology, Project and Technology, Shell Intl. E&P B.V.

Panel Session 3: Opportunities and Challenges in Developing Oil & Gas in Asia-Pacific

Thursday, 10 June, 1030-1200 hours

Convention Hall 2A

Significant oil and gas resources are available in the Asia-Pacific region to meet future demand growth, but increasingly complex exploration and development challenges must be met to ensure the timely delivery of necessary volumes. Maximising recovery from mature conventional assets and fully exploiting emerging non-conventional resources will be critical to meeting the region’s energy needs. Developing these volumes will require large investments, a talented workforce, state of the art technology and a long-term relationship and commitment between resource owners and industry.

As the resource base matures, future projects will face increasing technical, financial, and execution uncertainties and risks that must be successfully managed to ensure adequate volumes are brought to market.

Speakers will address many of the challenges and opportunities facing the industry in Asia-Pacific.  Themes to be addressed include:

  • Capability – understanding and profiling: R&D, human resources, technology and economics
  • Resources – hydrocarbon: size of the prize
  • Natural gas – GREEN energy
  • Relationships – NOC, IOC and service companies
