SPE E&P Glossary

Oilfield terminology in English is not always easily translated into other languages. To help transfer knowledge in the industry’s literature, SPE has developed this collaborative online glossary that will allow members to both look up and contribute terms and definitions in multiple languages.
To start the glossary, SPE secured permission from SPE member George E. King, BP, to use a list of about 4,000 definitions that he developed. We are grateful to Mr. King for his support of this effort.
Now we need your help!
Anyone can use the glossary for reference, but we need SPE members from around the world to help expand it. Not a member? Learn more about joining SPE.
Terms of Use
- Anyone can read the glossary, but only SPE members may write or edit entries.
- Contributions are limited to terms and definitions used in the upstream oil and gas industry.
- Images that clarify definitions may be added, but non-definition material (articles, figures, tables, etc.) may not be posted. Please do not add images for which you do not hold the copyright.
- Any entries not conforming to these guidelines or to SPE standards of professionalism will be removed by peers or SPE staff.
Target languages
There is a tab at the top of each English entry for a translation to one of the target languages for this glossary:
- en - English
- es - Spanish
- pt - Portugese
- ru - Russian
- zh - Chinese
If a translation exists in one of the target languages, the language tab at the top will be orange. If a translation does not exist, the tab will be gray.
