Wedge-shaped devices (usually containing steel teeth) that hold the pipe. Capable of suspending heavy pipe string loads. Drill collar slips are different in appearance from drill pipe slips. Drill collar slips have multiple hinged wedges (10 or more segments) to better grip heavy drill collars.
