Workshop in Thailand Brings Together Young Professionals, Industry Experts
An SPE young professionals workshop held 17–20 November in Bangkok, Thailand, attracted 72 attendees representing 14 organizations and seven countries.
The workshop featured the theme, “Staying in Front—Maintaining Your Competitive Edge in a Competitive Environment.” There was a high level of participation in a range of interactive technical sessions on topics such as unconventional resources development; deep water; high-pressure/high-temperature conditions; health, safety, and environment; and capability-building sessions. The workshop brought together young professionals from various backgrounds to exchange ideas with their peers and industry experts.
Sponsored by PTT Exploration & Production (PTTEP), the workshop opening was officiated by Phongsthorn Thavisin, executive vice president of development and engineering at PTTEP. The keynote presentation was given by Khunying Thongtip Ratanarat, member of the Petroleum Institute of Thailand Foundation, Board and Council of Trustees.
A panel session on “Bridging the Generation Gap” generated high-energy interaction between participants and panelists with various backgrounds and experience at institutions, such as Petronas, Chulalongkorn University, Baker Hughes, and Brunei Shell. A business project management exercise was conducted to involve participants in a realistic example that had cost and time constraints. Part of the participants’ challenge was to persuade joint venture partners to proceed with an investment that could result in potential returns associated risks.
