Q&A

JPT begins a yearlong series of interviews with Society luminaries in recognition of SPE’s 50th anniversary. The series kicks off with Sadad Al-Husseini, a former executive member of the Board of Directors of Saudi Aramco.

Technology Tomorrow • Energy: The Next Biotechnology Challenge

In the second-to-last installment in this yearlong series examining R&D needs and potential, Francesca de Ferra, a technical manager at the R&D Center of Eni, explores the challenges of applying biotechnology to the oil and gas sector and hints at the possibility of genetically modified organisms to achieve superior results.

Guest Editorial • The Winds of Change: Resource Nationalism Shifts Power to National Oil Companies

No longer are national oil companies just managing state-owned hydrocarbon resources to their nation’s long-term benefit; they are expanding internationally in direct competition with private firms. Pete Stark, Vice President at IHS Inc., describes what this shift means to the global energy industry.

Preview of SPE/IADC Drilling Conference

The annual SPE/IADC event is the industry’s top conference devoted to drilling. This year’s conference focuses on accessing reserves previously thought unattainable. More than 100 technical presentations will be presented under 16 major topic areas. Three plenary sessions, with panelists from Saudi Aramco, Schlumberger, Halliburton, BP, Shell, McKinsey and Co., Ensco, Total, Transocean, and Petrobras, will feature discussions of critical challenges facing the industry.

Section Milestones

Fifteen SPE sections marked milestone anniversaries in 2006 that included one 60-year, one 40-year, and one 25-year anniversary.
