OTC Brasil 2015: Industry Traditional Awards Held for the First Time in Brazil

Considered one of the main events in the global offshore oil and gas industry, the third edition of OTC Brasil is happening until Thursday in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (28 October 2015) – For the first time, OTC Brasil 2015, one of the most prominent offshore oil and gas industry events in the world, held two industry traditional awards ceremonies in Brazil.

After the topical luncheon, this Wednesday second day of the event, OTC Brasil Oversight Comittee Chairman, João Carlos de Luca, presented the Distinguished Achievement Award to Petrobras engineer Antonio Capeleiro Pinto, award for individual. “In my academic life, Brazil gave me everything. I studied in excellent public schools. In my professional life, Petrobras gave me the opportunities to develop a successful career. So I am grateful for both of them,” said Antonio.

The Distinguished Achievement Award for Companies was presented to Subsea 7, for Buoy

Supporting Risers System. The award was received by the company´s Vice-President Vitor Bomfim. “This was undoubtedly the most intense project the company accomplished in Brazil. But it’s not a coincidence that the company received this award. We have decades of investments in subsea engineering.”

In the afternoon, OTC Chairman, Joe Fowler, presented the Spotlight on New Technologies Award to FMC Technologies, for Shape Memory Alloy Fittings in Subsea Equipment, an innovative technology to replace orbital welding processes used to connect hydraulic tubing. FMC Technologies Technology and Engineering Vice-President, Paulo Couto, received the award and demonstrated the technology and its capacity to remember material shape. “It is a technology used many times in other industries, such as automotive, but first time in the application in oil and gas industry.”

Other highlights of the day happened at the topical luncheon, in which Petrobras E&P Director, Solange da Silva Guedes, showed an overview of pre-salt achievements. “Pre-salt is one of the highest cluster of knowledge turned in value in less than 10 years,” she concluded.

IBP president, Jorge Camargo, and E&P Executive Manager for Libra PSC, Anelise Lara, at Petrobras, participated in the panel “Professional Societies Leadership Summit,” where technical professional society leaders participated in an interactive panel on the role of these societies in integrating multidisciplinary technologies. Another well-attended event was the Professional of the Future program with over 700 university students.

On 29 October, Anelise Lara will discuss pre-salt performance and innovations, in a panel about Libra Field and Next Generation Projects in this new frontier of Brazilian exploration. Focused on business in Mexico, the last luncheon features Dr. Lucias Macias Chapa, Vice President of Strategic Alliances, PEMEX E&P, who will address the opportunities in the Mexican sector after the opening in the market. The prospects for oil prices on the global stage will also be discussed in another luncheon, presented by Atul Arya, his Vice President.

The exhibition included more than 160 companies and organizations, from 16 countries, presenting novel technological products and services. Malaysia is participating for the first time at OTC Brasil, with 10 companies. “Our objective at OTC Brasil is to look at the Brazilian market because there are some opportunities to transfer technology and do business with local companies, since we also face challenges in deepwater operations in Malaysia,” told Akar Bakur, MATRADE Oil & Gas Director.

OTC Brasil 2015: Industry Challenges and Employment Generation Debates in the First Day

Considered one of the main events in the global offshore oil and gas industry, the third edition of OTC Brasil is happening until Thursday in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (27 October 2015)– OTC Brasil 2015, one of the most prominent offshore oil and gas industry events in the world, began this Tuesday with an excellent technical program. Around  midday, ANP General Director, Magda Chambriard, opened the conference, with OTC chairmen, Joe Fowler, and João Carlos de Luca, and IBP president, Jorge Camargo.

With the theme “The Atlantic: from East to West – An Ocean of Innovation,” this year’s event will encompass offshore oil and gas exploration and development topics related to geology and subsurface technologies, offshore drilling and wells system, floating structures, and advanced subsea production to keep offshore facilities operating safely and efficiently.

The morning highlights included the panel session on New Oil in Old Offshore Fields, with Paulo Johann, Petrobras Geophisic Manager, who discussed seismic contributions to improve oil recovering. “4D Seismic is crucial to improve oil recovery and reduce operation costs,” Johann said.

In very dynamic panel on Pre-Salt Developments, the audience was eager to learn about the advances in this important area in Brazil. UFRJ University presented an economic study, projecting pre-salt projects performance in the new royalties sharing model.

Another highlight of the day was the topical luncheon “Megaprojects in the oil and gas industry.” The founder and president of Independent Project Analysis (IPA), Edward Merrow, addressed financial aspects in highly complex projects. According to him, one of the biggest challenges is that EPC and supply chain are coping with a demographic crisis

IBP Secretary General, Milton Costa Filho, also talked about human resources challenges. “When the barrel was around U$100, companies were hiring a lot of professionals and planning new projects. Today, we are hiring the young generation, hence we need to learn how to deal with them, with the millennials.”

Among the innovations this year  are the “Distinguished Achievement Award” and the “Spotlight on New TechnologiesSM Award,” traditional OTC awards in the US that will be held at OTC Brasil to recognize professionals and outstanding companies in the offshore E&P sector.

Also for the first time at OTC Brasil the “University R&D Showcase” a program in which 11 Brazilian universities and research centers will present new technologies that are being developed for the industry.

Tomorrow, IBP president, Jorge Camargo, and E&P Executive Manager for Libra PSC, Anelise Lara, Petrobras, will participate in the panel “Professional Societies Leadership Summit,” an opportunity for leaders to meet informally and participate in an interactive panel session themed “The Role of Professional Societies in Integrating Multidisciplinary Technologies.”

The “Professional of the Future” program, dedicated to university students is also featured in tomorrow’s agenda. In addition, the topical luncheon will have a presentation of Petrobras E&P Director, Solange da Silva Guedes, on the development of the Brazilian pre-salt and technological innovation projects in ultra-deep waters.

On Thursday 29 October, E&P Executive Manager for Libra PSC, Petrobras, Anelise Lara will discuss pre-salt performance and innovations, in a panel about Libra Field and Next Generation Projects in this new frontier of Brazilian exploration.

Focused on business in Mexico, the last luncheon will bring Dr.

Attendees are encouraged to visit the exhibition featuring 160 companies and organizations, from 16 countries.

Challenges Met With Optimism in Houston at the Second-Largest Society of Petroleum Engineers Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition

Houston, Texas (30 September 2015) — Registration totals exceeded expectations as 13,500 global exploration and production professionals gathered at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) flagship event the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston over three days this week 28-30 September.

“2040: The Journey and the Destination—Diverse Perspectives” was the Opening General Session theme on Monday. ATCE 2015 General Chairperson, Gustavo Hernández-García, director of operations for PEMEX E&P, introduced a distinguished panel of industry experts who discussed current trends and the recent challenges faced by the oil and gas industry. However, discussion stressed the resilience of the industry, the continued importance of fossil fuel energy to the world economy, and reassurance the industry will come through a difficult period and be stronger. Panel member Scott Tinker, director of the Bureau of Economic Geology said the energy mix has changed little in the past 35 years. “It’s driven by security. Is energy affordable, available, reliable, and sustainable? A lower price over a long time extends the future of oil.” He adds, “I continue to believe that energy is the greatest industry on the planet. It underpins everything.”

2015 President Helge Hove Haldorsen focused his comments on “the new normal.” At the Opening General Session he said, “We need to continuously adapt, strengthen, and reinvent our industry because oil and gas will be needed for decades to come.” On Wednesday he wrapped up his presidential term saying, “We will see what the new normal will be.”

Nathan Meehan began his term as SPE 2016 president with his vision stating, “We are on a mission to educate and provide safe, affordable energy to improve people’s lives.” Meehan said his priorities for the year ahead will focus on stressing public benefit; mentoring the next generation; sustainability; as well as health, safety, and environmental issues.

The more than 400 technical presentations provided break-through and improved efficiencies for best practices for the oil and gas industry. The 500 exhibits offered promising new and enhanced products and services. Networking opportunities were expanded due to the Open Access Day on Wednesday where more than 400 people took advantage of the complimentary registration. The conference featured more than 45 technical sessions, 34 training sessions, and young professional and student events and activities.

Some new features of the conference included the ENGenious program, which resulted in standing room only presentations from innovative technology companies. Another new feature was the opportunity to access live-stream and virtual sessions for those who could not attend the conference.

Participating in ATCE were engineers, operators, scientists, managers, and executives involved in all aspects of the global petroleum industry. ATCE offered unique opportunities for people at all career levels – including young professionals and students – to meet industry experts, network with peers, and access new technologies.

ATCE 2016 will be held in Dubai 26-28 September at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
