Society of Petroleum Engineers’ Global Membership Grows 5% to Record 97,100

RICHARDSON, Texas (3 February 2011) – SPE’s total global membership grew to a record 97,100 oil and gas professionals in 118 countries as of 31 December 2010, up 5% from 92,100 members in 2009. SPE membership has grown 40 % since 2005.

SPE membership includes engineers, scientists, technicians, managers, operators, educators and other professionals who work in the global upstream oil and gas industry, as well as student members who are enrolled in petroleum engineering or related programs at universities.

The geographic regions with the highest membership growth rates  were Southern Asia Pacific (23.2%); Russia and Caspian (15.5%);  South Central and Eastern Europe (10.4%) and South America and Caribbean (10.2%). The Middle East region had the highest number of new members.

In 2010, young professionals age 35 and under made up 25% of  SPE’s professional membership, up slightly compared with 2009 and up from just 18% of professional membership in 2005. The number of student members increased 10.6%. The average age of SPE members is 46, the same as 2009.

“We are pleased that membership grew in nearly every SPE region worldwide, including North America, where many professional societies have declining membership,” said Alain Labastie, 2011 SPE president. “SPE allows our members to share knowledge, expertise and technical solutions that help improve performance in the oil and gas industry. We are also pleased to report that the number of young members and student members continued to increase this year.”
