AIME eNews offers update for member societies

The quarterly eNews of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) provides news and upcoming events for member societies, including a report on the Emerging Leaders Alliance (ELA) that seeks to foster leadership in the engineering and scientific community. SPE young professionals attended the ELA meeting in October.

SPE establishes new Completions Optimization and Technology Award

The SPE Honors and Awards Program recognizes significant technical and professional contributions to the worldwide oil and gas industry. To address overlapping technical categories within the Production & Operations Award and Drilling & Completions Award disciplines, the SPE Technical Directors recommended a new Completions Optimization and Technology Award. The Drilling and Completions Award will change to the Drilling Engineering Award because completions will fall under the new award. SPE Members Invited to Edit, Expand New Multi-Language Glossary

The SPE E&P Glossary is a new multi-language reference for upstream oil and gas terms. SPE members are encouraged to directly add or edit terms, definitions and translations. To start the glossary, SPE member George E. King, BP, contributed a collection of about 4,000 English terms and definitions that he developed. Initial languages targeted for translation are Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese. English terms may also be added or edited. Instructions are provided with the glossary.

2008-2009 SPE Distinguished Lecture schedule announced

The scheduled appearances at SPE section meetings of the 29 SPE Distinguished Lecturers has been posted on SPE.org. The Distinguished Lecturer Program, supported by the SPE Foundation, offers a unique opportunity for members and guests to hear from industry leaders discussing challenges, trends, and technology. All six disciplines encompassed by the Society are represented in this season’s slate of lecturers, and includes presentations on reservoir management, artificial lift, hydraulic fracturing and more.

Five full-length Distinguished Lecturer videos now available

Full-length videos of five selected SPE Distinguished Lecturers are available free through July. Normally these are open to SPE members only. SPE members, share them with your colleagues, and then invite them to join SPE. PDF versions of the lecturers presentations are also posted, allowing you to view detailed graphs and images.

Indonesian president calls for more cooperation

In an article appearing in the latest edition of Talent & Technology, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhotono said, “…the economies of the world must brace themselves for tougher times, which have not been helped by continuing geopolitical uncertainties, as well as the challenges of how to add to world oil reserves and how to increase production of oil and gas.”
