San Antonio, Texas, USA (9 October 2012) – The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) announced today the launch of a pilot for a new knowledge-sharing site called PetroWiki. PetroWiki will be the online resource to research and share knowledge about E&P industry operations, ranging from basic engineering calculations to best practices appropriate to specific regions, formations, or resource types.

The PetroWiki pilot, launched 1 October, is based on the drilling and completions volume of the Petroleum Engineering Handbook (PEH). Published in 2007, many new technologies are missing from PEH. The wiki format will allow SPE members to keep PEH evergreen, updating and extending it to new technologies. By October 2013, the site will contain the complete handbook, and it will grow with contributions from SPE’s global membership base. All content in PetroWiki is vetted by moderators with subject matter expertise.

“This is a game-changer for SPE. PetroWiki will be an important technical resource for our industry, with rich links to other content, including papers in OnePetro” said Mark Rubin, Executive Director of SPE. “The opportunity for members to share their knowledge with others, and for younger members to learn from these experiences will be invaluable.”

About Society of Petroleum Engineers

Questions SPE consistently asks itself: How does this help our members? How does this help the industry? How does this move the industry forward?

One way these questions have been answered is by SPE’s recent contribution to and support of the American Geological Institute Foundation (AGI). AGI supports educational, scientific, and charitable activities like the Switch Energy Project, benefiting the entire geoscience community and the member societies affiliated with the Institute.

The Switch Energy Project is a film, web and education program to build energy awareness and efficiency, created to help people move forward together toward a smarter energy future.

Additionally, Switch, is the title of a new feature-length documentary film as part of the project.

As a benefit to our members and ATCE attendees, there will be a special, complimentary Switch documentary screening on 8 October 2012. In the film, energy visionary Dr. Scott Tinker goes on a spectacular, global adventure to find out what the future of energy holds. Dr. Tinker explores the world’s leading energy sites, from coal to solar, oil to biofuels, many highly restricted and never before seen on film. He gets straight answers from the people driving energy today, international leaders of government, industry, and academia. In the end, he cuts through the confusion to discover a path to the future that is surprising and remarkably pragmatic.

Join us.

Your RSVP is recommended by not required. Do so here: RSVP.

Learn more and watch the film trailer HERE.

NOTE: This fraudulent scheme is still an on-going issue for our organization and our members and your help is appreciated.

Over the last few days it has come to our attention that criminals are using SPE’s corporate name in an attempt to commit fraud on the public. To date, there have been numerous checks presented to banks for collections. In each case, an individual receives a fraudulent check with SPE’s name as the payer, along with a San Francisco address. The individual is then asked to deposit the check, and forward funds to another person.

SPE is in no way involved in this fraud scheme. SPE has no San Francisco address, and would never request that a payee forward funds to anyone.

SPE has contacted its bank, and notified the proper authorities. If you receive an unexpected check from The Society of Petroleum Engineers, Inc. and are asked to in turn send money to someone else, please contact Cheryl Finnerty at 972-952-9424. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, SEND MONEY TO ANYONE BASED ON THESE FRAUDULENT DOCUMENTS.
