ABOUT
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), also known as geologic sequestration, is the isolation of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the earth’s atmosphere. CCS may play a significant role in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. To further the implementation of this technology, demonstration projects are underway around the world. The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE-NETL) funds seven regional partnerships to conduct geologic sequestration research throughout the United States. The Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium (MGSC), lead by the geological surveys of Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky was formed in 2003 to research geologic storage potential in coal seams, mature oil fields, and deep saline reservoirs.
PRESENTER
Dr. Robert J. Finley will present a webseminar on the MGSC geologic sequestration program focusing on the Illinois Basin – Decatur Project (IBDP), a one million tonne deep saline reservoir storage project in Decatur, Illinois. The IBDP will begin injection of CO2 at a rate of 1,000 tonnes per day starting in September 2011. This presentation covers all aspects of developing a deep saline sequestration project from site characterization through geophysical and geochemical monitoring techniques, modeling, well construction and drilling, and much more.
