Petroleum Society of Canada Completes Merger with SPE

The boards of the Petroleum Society of Canada and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) have approved a merger agreement that will create a new Canadian organization, SPE Canada, to serve the combined membership of around 4,500 in Canada. SPE Canada will focus on enhancing benefits for members and supporting the Canadian E&P business and technology. READ MORE>>>

Section Membership Contest Winners Announced

89 SPE sections saw membership increases during the year ending 31 August, but only these sections won the 2008-2009 SPE Section Membership Contest. Of special note are the Terengganu and Warri Nigeria sections who doubled their membership during the same period.

Incoming President Calls for ‘Dedicated, Passionate’ Volunteers

2009-2010 SPE President Behrooz Fattahi says the worthwhile goals of SPE cannot be achieved without “dedicated, passionate volunteers.” Read his plan for opening the avenues to volunteerism in the September issue of the newly designed online print version of the Journal of Petroleum Technology.

IT Tech Section is now 'Digital Energy'

The SPE Board at its March meeting approved the name change of the IT Technical Section to the Digital Energy Technical Section (DETS).

“This change reflects the primary mission of the Section and appeals to a broader audience,” according to Section chairperson Mehrzad Mahdavi. “We also intend to promote the significant impact of information technologies beyond the main support functions of companies into the forefroont of integrated operations,” added Philippe Flichy, head of the Section’s Event and Marketing Committee. Historic ATCE Program Selection Meeting Ends in Hang-Ups

Until this year, the committee meeting to select the program for the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition could take up to two days to complete. Some committee members commuted two or three additional days, just to get to the meeting. Last year, the committee whittled the time down to a couple of hours, but there was still the extraordinary expense of time and money just to get to the meeting. That was then. Read more »

Society of Petroleum Engineers Membership Increases to 88,000 Worldwide at 2008 Year-end

RICHARDSON, Texas (9 February 2009) – Total professional and student membership in the Society of Petroleum Engineers reached a record 88,000 members worldwide in 2008, up 11 percent over 2007. The number of members age 35 and under also increased to 23 percent of total membership.
