SPE Student Members of the Rajiv Gandhi School of Engineering in Chennai, India hit the ground running, so to speak, in their first year as an SPE Student Chapter. In one month the chapter hosted a field trip for juniors and sophomores to help them understand the practical perspective of their studies; conducted a number of video presentations to help make learning more enjoyable and illustrative; launched the “SPE School,” an initiative to enhance the communication and leadership skills of students, and which will also act as an internal knowledge sharing forum; and launched a job seeker’s forum aimed at providing assistance to final year members to fine tune their job searching skills.
On the social and environmental front, the chapter formed an Eco Club to educate the public on various environmental issues and how individuals can contribute to a greener and cleaner future; conducted a survey to examine students’ knowledge about global warming; and observed World Water Day with activities partly sponsored by Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development.
The chapter has increased its membership significantly, and has plans to expand their activities and membership during the coming semester. For their efforts, the chapter has been named Chapter of the Month for July.
