On October 2nd, approximately 250 attendees, 143 of those SPE members of the SPE Student Chapter Kwame – Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, visited the Anglo-Gold Ashanti Mines Sansu Shaft at Obuasi as part of a Geology field observation. The mine is the biggest in Ghana and one of the largest in Africa.
The members toured the general geology and specific geology areas of the site, including the Sansu Shaft, which is the largest shaft there. Members saw the actual operations involved in the selection of the rock and the breaking of it. They went on to observe the conveyor system and the processing unit. Finally, the students were guided through the chemical processing to see gold processing.
