Congratulations to the March Student Chapter of the Month – Indian Institute of Technology

The Indian Institute of Technology student chapter located in Kharagpur, India faced its obstacles head-on in order to increase membership fivefold from the previous year. With the goal of recruiting more members, the student chapter held a 3-day membership drive, garnering the attention of 150 of students with 120 submitted applications for membership.

The student chapter organized several technical workshops and hosted guest lecturers with hopes of continuing the tradition of introducing industry experts from the field of oil and natural gas to its members. In September 2011, the IITK student chapter, along with the Department of Mining, jointly organized an Introductory Seminar. The guests consisted of highly respected and experienced industry professionals from Oil India Limited.

A significant accomplishment for the student chapter was hosting an Inter College Petroleum case study competition in 2011 GREATSTEP. GREATSTEP is an annual departmental festival of mining engineering and India’s largest geo-resource festival.

This year, GREATSTEP had a special inclination toward the petroleum industry in accordance with the theme “Petra la Mineria.” The event was the highlight of the festival with participation from 23 different teams from 12 colleges across India. The problem statement was based on “Oil production by Texado in Ecuadorian rain forest.”

A total of seven teams were selected for the final round, comprised of students from Indian School of Mines, IT-BHU, NIT Raipur and Indian Institute of Technology. At the closing ceremony of GREATSTEP, Indian Institute of Technology was inaugurated and t-shirts were distributed to student members, participants, faculties and guests. Overall, the event was a success.

Congratulations, Indian Institute of Technology for winning SPE March Student Chapter of the Month!
