As a part of MIT SPE Fest AIIIP (All India Industry Interaction Programme), the students of B.E. Petroleum Engineering organized a model making competition. This year, the problem statement given to the students was side-coring tool. Side wall coring is an important part of the industry. The teams were told to make a side wall coring tool with dimensions of 4 inches during tripping-in operation and 5 inches during tripping-out operation, including core sample. The wellbore was 6 inches in diameter. The hole was cased for 3 feet and, thereafter, formation was present for 40 centimeters. The formation was divided in four layers of 10 centimeters each. The teams were instructed to take out minimum 2 cores at different depths.
Twenty-three teams participated in all. Judges for the competition were alumni of the institute, Mr. Shahvir Pooniwala from BJ Services and Mr. Nitin Gandhare from Shiv-Vani drilling.
The day-long competition was a success with teams coming up with unique and innovative ideas. The winners will be awarded during the annual event in March.
