Texas A&M University’s Chapter hosts interesting Lunch & Learn

Members of the SPE Chapter, along with members of the American Association of Drilling Engineers Chapter, had a unique Lunch & Learn on  March 10. Greg Hall, the owner of Drillers Supply International, was the guest speaker.  The company was responsible for the rescue of the Chilean miners.  Hall spoke about the challenges faced during the rescue.  Chapter members were honored to have him speak of this experience.

Chapter selects contestants for the next Asia-Pacific paper contest

On the 5th and 6th of March, CUPB held their sixth SPE thesis competition.  Pr. Zhao Xionghu, the Dean of the Postgraduate Office, along with teachers from the Petroleum Engineering Department, were the judges.

Nine graduates and three undergraduates entered the semi-final, with eight participants going through to the final.  In the final, the contestants had to deliver an English speech about their thesis, and answer questions raised by the judges.  This gave them the chance to practice their English language and presenting skills.

Prizes were awarded as follows:

First place: Li Qiu and Sheng Mao

Second place: Ma Mingbo and Chen Hao Xu Xinchen

Third place: Cao Jie, Xie Quan and Yuan Jianbo

These students will have the chance to go to India to participate in the next SPE Asia-Pacific Regional Student Paper Contest.

February Student Chapter of the Month – University of Oklahoma

The University of Oklahoma SPE Student Chapter has been a very busy successful chapter.  They have been constantly striving to increase their membership and to keep their members active in professional, service and social events.

This chapter has been awarded the Hope Award for their accomplishments during the University of Oklahoma’s Relay for Life, raising just under $12,000 for the American Cancer Society. They participated in Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Habitat for Humanity Shack-A-Thon, OU Big Event, American Red Cross Blood Drives and many other ongoing events.

They hold the most recent coveted title of SPE Petrobowl Champions, which they won at ATCE in Florence, Italy. The chapter hosted a booth at the College of Engineering Shell Fall Festival where they spoke to students about the Society of Petroleum Engineers. This chapter continues to hold technical meetings every 2-3 weeks and have hosted Linn Energy, Cimarex, Anadarko, Devon Energy and Chesapeake at these meetings.

The University of Oklahoma SPE Student Chapter has several plans projected to keep their members busy maintaining a successful chapter.

Congratulations, University of Oklahoma SPE Student Chapter. Continue to strive and achieve excellence.
