The University of Manchester student chapter was only established in 2011, but they have already worked hard to put the chapter’s goals into action. The students want to increase technical knowledge, establish professional networking opportunities and create communication and relationships with other student chapters within the London Section.
To assist its members in increasing their knowledge of the industry, the chapter hosted guest lecturer Mike J. Smith. Mr. Smith, formerly the British Petroleum’s Vice President of Reservoir Management, gave a lecture on the topic of “Deepwater Drilling and Macondo”. He covered techniques and equipment for extracting hydrocarbons from underwater reservoirs and the challenges connected to this process.
Increasing interaction amongst other student chapters within the London Section prompted the Manchester Student chapter to organize the 1st SPE Northern Universities Winter Football Cup. Other universities that participated included the University of Leeds and University of Salford. The event comprised 5 a-sided teams from each university. The chapters competed for a trophy and the honor of being champions of the first ever inter-chapter competition. Not only did the student chapter organize the event, but they were crowned the winners as well!
Engaging its members, the University of Manchester promotes team building and strengthens team spirit with activities like bowling and rock climbing.
Congratulations, University of Manchester, for being selected as the SPE February Student Chapter of the Month!

The UTT student chapter of the month has been keeping busy engaging its current members and recruiting new ones. The executive member of the UTT student chapter visited the University’s S.F.T.I campus where they demonstrated the benefits of being a student member of SPE.
They highlighted the achievements that the student chapter has achieved and seminars and forums that the chapter has hosted, including a seminar on “Production Optimization using ESPs, presented by a past graduate of UTT who is currently training at Petrotrin.
Along with recruiting and retaining members, the UTT chapter encourages it members to give back to the community. The student chapter held its annual blood drive in September that allowed each chapter member to give blood.
Also, in September, the student chapter donated hampers to the elderly and mentally challenged at the Couva Extended Care Centre. They singed and danced while visiting with the patients.
On November 30, UTT student chapter hosted their third annual “Trini Christmas Breakfast” from which the proceeds from the dishes that were sold are used to prepare food hampers for those who are less fortunate.
Congratulations, University of Trinidad and Tobago for achieving student chapter of the month. Keep up the great work!
Mr. Labastie was introduced by the UPPA student chapter president Brice Siewe during a visit to University of Pau. Mr. Labastie presented on “Hydrocarbons Reserves and Resources: Facts and Myths”. He spoke about unconventional resources, which represent huge resources, and the challenges associated with converting them into reserves and production. These challenges include high technology development, investment and a large open field of jobs.
