Distinguished Lecturer Found Time for One of Life’s "Most Rewarding" Experiences

Curtis BlountI remember the call from an associate some 14 years ago: “Hey Curt, I nominated you to become an SPE Distinguished Lecturer!”

First words out of my mouth were, “Thanks for the recognition, but I don’t have time for that! Things are busy and I don’t see how that helps me out in my job or benefits my company,” or something very close to that.  I refused the nomination.

Many months later, another business associate once again nominated me for the SPE DL program, and he cajoled me into at least giving it a try and putting together a presentation for the committee.  I am glad that he nominated me, and that I followed through.

Although I thought “I did not have time,” I somehow did manage to make time, and not only did I get company approval for the lecture circuit, my company ended up being very supportive of the opportunity. It was a real eye-opening global experience.

Traveling to areas I never thought of visiting, I found interested and interesting SPE members, meetings, and discussions at each stop.  On some of the tour stops, I thought to myself, “This must be what a dignitary or rock-star experiences.” And at others, well, not so much.

Some of the tours involved what looked like a hectic mix of schedules on planes trains and automobiles. While previewing schedules of more than one tour, I was convinced the SPE DL manager must really not like me much. But I was wrong.

Looking back, it was one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.

And some of the less-than-desirable-looking tour schedules turned out to be among the most rewarding. It is difficult to describe the depth of the experiences, networking opportunities with other industry professionals, and the value the DL experience brought to my company, my career, and my life.

How to See the World in 300 Days or Less

Jim CraftonOne of the most rewarding ways to “See the World” is to become an SPE Distinguished Lecturer.  Not only will you literally have the opportunity to “See the World”, but in doing so you will help make possible one of the most effective teaching programs, technology dissemination programs, professional recognition programs and have one of life’s most enjoyable experiences. The SPE Distinguished Lecturer Program recognizes the technical development and knowledge transfer skills of a select number of SPE members, typically about 30, who can expect to visit up to 40 different SPE Sections around the world, speaking to as many as 2000 members and guests. There is even the possibility of participation in SPE webinars and videos. These SPE Distinguished Lecturers are selected from a group of perhaps 100 nominees, which out of a membership of over 100,000, is a privilege in its own right.

Your opportunity to recognize those who have outstanding technical skills coupled with the ability to tell their story to a broad audience and who have the time and desire to “See the World” is open from February through 15 March. Even better, once selected, the Society handles both travel arrangements and expenses for the lecturers. You could give your nominee the opportunity to outrun volcanoes, travel on unique airlines, outwit customs agents, meet friends in faraway places and in general just have a spectacular time sharing their knowledge with our SPE members throughout the world.
