Guest Lecturer Dr. Qin Wenting Speaks at University of Petroleum China, Beijing

On April 21, 2012, the SPE Student Chapter CUPB held a technical lecture titled “Water Cresting Control with Bilateral Water Sink Technique in Horizontal Wells for Heavy Oil with Bottom Water”. The guest speaker  was Dr. Qin Wenting, a graduate of Louisiana State University, and her main research interest included the exploration of heavy oil reservoirs with strong bottom water drives and enhanced oil recovery.

Dr. Qin introduced the Bilateral Water Sink (BWS), a new cold production technique to improve heavy oil recovery to the audience. The principle of the BWS method is to suppress water cresting by separately producing oil and water simultaneously from two vertically parallel horizontal wells completed in the oil and water zones.

Dr. Qin ended her presentation with a Q&A session.

Promoting Careers in April at the Universiti Teknologi Petronas

On April 14th, the Career Guidance Seminar (CGS 2012) was held for the second year with more than 100 students in attendance. CGS was sponsored by an SPE  section and student chapter, and University Alumni Association. The theme was “Future of the Oil and Gas Industry”. The morning speakers gave presentations followed by a forum of panelists sharing their thoughts on opportunities and challenges in the oil and gas industry. After lunch, there was a breakout session that divided the participants into groups that were facilitated by YPs from SPE-KL to discuss different topics. Finally, there was a resume collection for students who wanted to submit their resumes to the many companies who were present.

During the week of April  9–12, the student chapter launched their concept of entrepreneurship. One of our goals was to have three outside vendors set up booths in the foyer for business. This helped students gain knowledge and increase their motivation to become entrepreneurs. The Chapter plans to organize similar events in the future to continually look for sponsors and establish relationships with these vendors. On the last day, Weatherford Malaysia hosted two sessions of talks and held interviews. Topics included “The Weatherford Graduate Engineer Program” and “Engineer: What Lies Ahead”? The first 24 applicants were interviewed for internship placement. Resumes were collected and final-year students will be contacted directly by Weatherford Malaysia for phone interviews.

SMK Tronoh, a rural secondary school, was chosen by the student chapter to receive an Educational Talk Day. Background and operations of the oil and gas industry were briefly explained to the students in hope that they will choose oil and gas as their future career.

Reservoir Engineer Speaks to the China University of Petroleum-Beijing (CUPB) Student Chapter

On the night of February 15th, five representatives of the CUPB SPE student chapter took part in the monthly meeting of SPE-NCI in Lido hotel. The corporate SPE members were managers and technicians mainly from Schlumberger, Newfield, Shell, ConocoPhillips, China Oil Field Services Limited and other famous petroleum companies.

The theme of this meeting was “Intelligent Wells – Where does it make sense and Where is it headed?”. The speaker was Younes Jalali, a reservoir engineering advisor with Schlumberger. Younes Jalali presented the rationale for the 1st and 2nd generation I-wells, and then discussed two areas with which the industry is still grappling.

After the speech, the members of the CUPB student chapter talked with staff members from various petroleum companies. From the meeting, the students learned a lot and hope to take part in this kind of activity more often, as it could improve their standard and help with career choices.
